Week 10: Extreme Weather

 This week we focused on extreme weather and extremely hot and cold weather affecting many regions and countries. The country I selected was Russia, it is a country known for its extreme temperatures. Russia is known for its climate ranging from steppes in the south to humid continental in much of European Russia, and subarctic Siberia to tundra climate in the polar north. Winters tend to vary from cool along the Black Sea coast to frigid in Siberia. The country is bounded by plenty of mountains along the southern and eastern parts of its land. The west is often exposed to occasional winter incursions of milder Atlantic air, due to this the winters start to become more and more severe towards the eastern side of the country.  Throughout most of the year, seasons tend to vary from summer and winter-type weather, since the transitions from each season tend to happen so quickly. Week 8: Mass Wasting

This week's topic within the class has been Mass Wasting and how it affects different regions worldwide. Throughout the week we learned about Mass Wasting which is a set of events such as landslides, mudslides, and rockslides, typically shortly after these events especially with rain there tends to be massive flooding. Throughout Russia, the country as a whole is affected by 725 landslides yearly, some of the major cities affected are Moscow, Kazan, and Volgograd, to name a few of them. Due to present recordings and how the climate has been changing, it is reported that the duration of the period of mudflow danger on the northern slope will increase by 47-50 days on average. As well as the size of these mudflows growing as well, growing by more than 20-30% and the amounts of different matter will certainly rise too. Volcanic activity in Russia

 Just like many places throughout the world, there is some activity when it comes to volcanic activity. Russia is actually quite active with volcanic activity out of the 77 volcanoes established in Russia, about 61 of them are still considered active. The most active part of Russia would have to be The Kamchatka Peninsula, which extends all the way to the Pacific Ocean, roughly 4,000 miles away from eastern Moscow. It has had around 60 substantial eruptions within the past 10,00 years. It is considered to be one of the world's largest and most concentrated areas of geothermal activity, with over 30 active volcanoes nearby. Klyuchevskaya is known as the highest and most active volcano standing at a tall 5 kilometers high (3 miles). The most recent eruption here took place last October almost marking it a full year since it's latest eruption. Week 3: Earthquakes

 Throughout this week's lecture, we are studying the fault lines within different countries and how they affect each of them individually. We also look at how these fault lines are affected during an earthquake. Specifically in the country I selected, which is Russia. They aren't very active when it comes to earthquake hazards but they have most recently had some activity as recent as yesterday. Most recently, Russia was hit with two earthquakes in the 4.0 and above territory, as well as one at a 3.2 magnitude and lastly, a 4.5 magnitude located near the Bering Sea, in Russia. On average per year Russia is prone to about 212 earthquakes and about 17 per month, as well as roughly one per day. Though Russia has a vast majority of land, there are also some parts located in seismically active areas and as stated above with evidence it's clear that earthquakes do happen within the country. Week 2 tectonic plates

 This week in class we are focusing on tectonics, the plates, and the boundaries. Where Russia is located on the Eurasian plate the continent of Europe. The Eurasian plate is the third-largest plate only being rivaled by The Pacific and North American plates. Tectonic plates have been moving since the beginning time most speculate. The Eurasian plate contains parts of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, because of the fact that Earth's tectonic plate boundaries consist of continents and oceanic crust. Just as mentioned in the week 2 lecture, the earth's layers are moving at a rate that is slow initially but going at the same speed rate as the growth of our fingernails. It is sandwiched between North America and the African plate on each of the north and west sides. The west side shares a divergent plate boundary with North America as well.   I chose Russia for my blog post for this semester because I've always been fascinated with how different things are in Russia compared to our lives here in America. I think ever since I was a little kid I had this interest in learning more about Russia because of the fact Russia and America don't see eye to eye in many things, being able to see how Russians carry themselves as well as the differences in the landscape of their country. Russia is located in Northern Asia which borders the Arctic Ocean between Eastern Europe and the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. Russia is regarded as the biggest country in the world with an area of land coming in at 16,376,80 Km.
