Week 8: Mass Wasting

This week's topic within the class has been Mass Wasting and how it affects different regions worldwide. Throughout the week we learned about Mass Wasting which is a set of events such as landslides, mudslides, and rockslides, typically shortly after these events especially with rain there tends to be massive flooding. Throughout Russia, the country as a whole is affected by 725 landslides yearly, some of the major cities affected are Moscow, Kazan, and Volgograd, to name a few of them. Due to present recordings and how the climate has been changing, it is reported that the duration of the period of mudflow danger on the northern slope will increase by 47-50 days on average. As well as the size of these mudflows growing as well, growing by more than 20-30% and the amounts of different matter will certainly rise too. As shown in the image you can see the amount of destruction. The landslide that caused damages to the World Cup stadium in Russia cost the country about $257 million to repair any damages it may have caused. Though Russia isn't susceptible to having landslides, they aren't as frequent at having any as opposed to a country like the US or Japan. Studying and keeping an eye on the weather, systems in place are needed in order to forecast and prevent land and mudslides from occurring.
