Week 2 tectonic plates
This week in class we are focusing on tectonics, the plates, and the boundaries. Where Russia is located on the Eurasian plate the continent of Europe. The Eurasian plate is the third-largest plate only being rivaled by The Pacific and North American plates. Tectonic plates have been moving since the beginning time most speculate. The Eurasian plate contains parts of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, because of the fact that Earth's tectonic plate boundaries consist of continents and oceanic crust. Just as mentioned in the week 2 lecture, the earth's layers are moving at a rate that is slow initially but going at the same speed rate as the growth of our fingernails. It is sandwiched between North America and the African plate on each of the north and west sides. The west side shares a divergent plate boundary with North America as well. The south side of the Eurasian plate also neighbors the Arabian, Indian, and Sunda plates. Yearly on average, the Eurasian plate moves about one-quarter to half an inch. It straddles Iceland and it tears into two different separate pieces at 2.5 to 3 cm per year. Throughout Russia, the climate differs from region to region which can go from subtropical climate to polar climate. Serbia has permafrost throughout the year which causes massive flooding in the springtime and then leads to wildfires come summer and fall. Russia also is known to be prone to having volcanoes along the peninsula of Kamchatka and even earthquakes. There is massive drought, landslides, and high winds known to cause massive damage. The most recent catastrophic occurrence was an earthquake in north Sakhalin which resulted in almost 2000 casualties due to the massive 7.7 quake. Heavy rain hit south Russia brutally which affected around 72,000 people as well as collapsing thousands of homes and killing 172 people in the process. More than 20 regions of Russia's Federations were affected by the 30,000 wildfires that were taking place around July of 2010. This was due to the temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius, in turn killing 40 people and burning down the homes of 2,200. Through Russia's vast regions, there are many of which differ and many which are similar, The differences in these regions are the catastrophic hazards that occur due to the moving of tectonic plates throughout the regions.
